What to Know

Critics Consensus

This suburban nightmare sometimes achieves the campy fright of creator Ryan Murphy's best horror fare, but it sprawls in too many ludicrous directions to satisfy.

The Watcher: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Series creators Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy, inspired by a true story, turn the stacked cast into delicious characters served with a sly relish. Great binge fodder. Oct 28, 2022 Full Review The Watcher: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Camilla Long Times (UK) If it’s good acting you’ve come for, you can expect it from this cast. Only where is the rest of it? It’s so stylised and lifeless it passes over one’s frontal lobe like lukewarm tapioca. Oct 24, 2022 Full Review The Watcher: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Dan Einav Financial Times Instead of tapping into legitimate fears about safety and surveillance, the show overplays its hand, revelling in conspiracies about a local satanic cult and other grisly atrocities. Rated: 2/5 Oct 18, 2022 Full Review The Watcher: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Pallavi Keswani The Hindu An underwhelming tribute to the American suburban thriller. Jan 24, 2024 Full Review The Watcher: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Javier Estrada El Mundo (Spain) With a good rhythm but dosing its information, Ryan Murphy once again generates bad vibes for viewers who what this suspenseful story. But you might wish he’d take a little time off and sit a little longer with his writers before they dash on to the next overly long and under-thought project. Chantel R It’s quite interesting, but the ending was weird and kind of confusing. I guess it was kind of a cliff hanger because the ending does make you want to know what’s going to happen next…. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Stephen B Considering how great the first couple episodes were, I couldn’t believe the narrative choices made for these characters. When characters start making completely irrational decisions (examples: not checking the basem*nt for tunnels, Nora seeing the video and immediately divorcing her husband), the audience just completely loses interest in the story line. Save your time, just read the article about the true story. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review Nashville I The first 90% of the series is perfection. However, the finale proves Ryan Murphy's shortcomings as a writer linger.MANY key mysteries from the series are left unanswered, and forgotten in a way that suggests Murphy realized he literally didn't leave himself enough time. Most of the early series is good, but you'll be upset with how unfinished the series was in general. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review Kyle J Beginning, middle, and end. The beginning was good. The middle needed a tummy-tuck, and the end was so flat it couldn’t hold up skinny jeans. (Ie, it did not exist.) Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review Neil D Great thriller. Always a good twist and keeps you on your toes. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review Michelle H I didnt realise it was the Never-ending story. First couple of episodes set up a good storyline but it lead you down about 10 different Never-ending and twisting paths, with no conclusion. Very unsatisfying to watch.
