Belimo CCVs, Sensors, VAVs Help College Achieve Efficiency Goals

Western Wyoming Community College is a public community college located in Rock Springs, Wyoming that was established in the fall of 1959.Western offers a range of educational programs, including certificates, associate degrees, and a bachelor’s degree.In the early 2000s, Western upgraded their pneumatically controlled air handlers to direct digital control (DDC). However, the pneumatic control valves and actuators for the hot and chilled water coils, as well as the single and dual-duct VAVs, were left untouched. Belimo’s RetroFIT+ program, which offers a complete approach to upgrading HVAC systems in existing buildings, was instrumental in helping Western become more energy efficient. In total, Belimo was able to deliver over 300 CCV ball valves, 260 spring return actuators, 230 airflow measurement & control actuators (VAV Compact), and 570 temperature sensors for the retrofit.

Advanced Butterfly Valve Helps Building Complete Retrofit on Tight Schedule

When it comes to HVAC system upgrades, the quality and reliability of the solutions often dictate the success of a project. This was clear in a recent undertaking by an Alabama-based financial services company that aimed to retrofit their HVAC system with the latest in energy efficient technology.

At the forefront of this endeavor was the integration of Belimo’s innovative new Advanced Butterfly Valve featuring the new JR actuator, a key element to significantly enhancing the system’s performance. This initiative was headed up by an experienced controls contractor, whose expertise and strategic selection of Belimo products played a pivotal role in steering the project towards success

Wood Hub is one of the most ambitious buildings in the Benelux in terms of energy performance and carbon footprint.

Multi-disciplinary industrial group CFE, BPI Real Estate, BPC Group and Wood Shapers have pooled together all their expertise to build their new headquarters in Auderghem. Wood Hub, a highly sustainable, innovative and welcoming office building of some 7300m², built by and for their employees.
VMA, also part of CFE, provided the special technologies.

Thanks to an intelligent combination of sustainable wood and a concrete structure, the building enjoys a very low carbon footprint while also boasting BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Platinum certification. With nearly 300 photovoltaic solar panels and geothermal energy, the office is virtually self-sufficient in terms of energy.
In addition to the offices, there is an atrium with co-working spaces on the ground floor, as well as wellness areas.
The green roof terrace is also an ideal place to encourage synergies and human interactions.

VMA took care of the entire technical installation as well as the Smart Building software (VMANAGER) using a multitude of motorised 2-way valves, 3-way valves and pressure-independent 6-way valves from Belimo.
Belimo fire damper actuators help increase safety, while Belimo sensors collect all the data needed to enable the air treatment to create a perfect indoor climate.

At the epicentre of intelligent building automation– A showcase project for learning and experiencing.

As a specialist for intelligent building automation solutions, Loxone has been supporting specialist planners, architects and building owners in the implementation of their building projects since 2009. Belimo RetroFIT+ uncovers energy savings in existing buildings.

Founded in 1917, Providence College sits on an illustrious 105-acre campus in the heart of Providence, Rhode Island.

The retrofit project was completed in Spring 2023, and now Arden and Providence College plan to begin collecting data to quantify the actual fl ow reductions. The reduction in pumping will lead to decreased electricity usage, which is in line with the college’s commitment to increase energy effi ciency and improve environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. Allowing their cooling needs to be met with the existing chiller plant confi guration, the school saved the cost of buying and installing a new chiller, amounting to an estimated $500,000 - $1,000,000 in savings. This fi gure excludes the millions of additional funds and months of work that would have been needed to resize and replace the existing main chilled water line.

Vlaams bouwbedrijf Van Laere zet nieuwe standaard in innovatie en duurzaamheid

Van Laere, een oer-Vlaamse onderneming, is al meer dan 85 jaar een toonaangevend bouwbedrijf in Kruibeke. Sinds mei 2023 hebben ze echter hun 70 jaar oude gebouwen geruild voor een gloednieuw hoofdkantoor iets verderop in Zwijndrecht.

Het gebouw biedt met ongeveer 2600m² ruimte voor 85 werkplekken. Het is met vele houtstructuren een typevoorbeeld voor het duurzaam kantoorgebouw van de toekomst.

Dankzij de combinatie van een slim ontwerp, verantwoorde materiaalkeuzes en met intelligente software geoptimaliseerde HVAC-installaties werd de CO2-uitstoot gereduceerd tot 1/10e in vergelijking met een klassiek kantoorgebouw.

Zo werkte Cegelec met de Belimo drukonafhankelijke 6-wegkranen om de klimaatplafonds te voeden.

Energy efficiency thanks to renewable energies.

From a historic factory building to one of the most modern and sustainable car centresin Switzerland: The new flagship store of the second-generation Swiss family business "Kenny's Auto-Center" covers more than 6,200 m² and includes a large workshop, a modern showroom and an in-house café. The building, which opened in 2022, is designed to be CO2-neutral and will be powered by geothermal probes and a 2,000 m² solar installation. The latter has a peak output of 500 kWp and, in addition to powering the building, will also supply the energy needs of 30 vehicle charging stations by producing excess energy during the summer months and feeding it into electric vehicles.

Belimo supplied a range of products for the HVAC systems in the flagship store, including electronic pressure-independent control valves, zone valves and duct sensors, which, thanks to factory parametrisation and connectivity, reduced installation time to a minimum. The HVAC design was carried out by Virtuos 3D Modelling AG and the system integration by gatec AG.

The future of building technology is data-based.

The Salzburg University of Applied Sciences (FH) was founded in 1995 and offers a variety of bachelor's and master's degree programs for more than 3,000 students annually. In 2021, the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences implemented the Twin²Sim research project at the Kuchl campus. Twin²Sim represents the largest research investment made by the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences since its founding. Consisting of a test bench, several test rooms, and a multifunctional laboratory, Twin²Sim offers researchers in construction and building technology unique research and practical opportunities.

A number of different Belimo devices are installed at Twin²Sim, including pressure-independent characterised control valves (PIQCV), pressure-independent 6-way control valves (EPIV), and flow sensors. This installation is used to research heating and cooling systems under different conditions and with the use of different facades. TB D+H carried out the HVAC planning for this project, and the MCR planning was the responsibility of TB Novias, and R+S Systems GmbH supervised system integration.

CM Hasselt concentrates six offices in one energy-efficient head office at the Kanaalkom in Hasselt

The local services of Belgium's largest health insurance fund were spread across six outdated offices in Hasselt. The new head office is a very accessible building with lots of light and plenty of space where it is pleasant to work. With its 16,500 m², the building accommodates offices, a childcare center, a restaurant and some commercial spaces. The entire project cost about 35 million euros.

The modular design of four interconnected volumes allows for easy future adjustments. This allows CM to rent or sell different parts of the building.

The HVAC company Imtech has also taken this modularity into account. The fossil-free installation with heat pumps provides both heating and cooling, while the solar panels provide the necessary electrical energy. The more than 250 climate ceilings can be controlled individually with EPIV 6-way valves that were pre-programmed and addressed by Belimo. This resulted in significant time savings during installation. The Belimo Energy Valves regulate the correct energy flows and at the same time transparently monitor each consumption.
Imtech also made the ventilation system efficient and safe with Belimo (fire) damper drives.
The Belimo sensors in the air handling unit ensure perfect quality of the indoor climate.

Collège Laval a Class Act Continues to Make a Big Impact on Unparalleled Education

Collège Laval maintains an unparalleled quality of education by taking the health of its students and staff very seriously. By installing 115 smart room sensors within the college, it is now possible to precisely detect air quality in real-time, even from a smartphone. To achieve this, the college staff worked together with Immotik, a distributor, installer, and integrator of BACnet products, to select and install a network of sensors in the six wings of the college. Every sensor can be scanned quickly and easily to access data in real-time, without prior calibration, via the Belimo Assistant App and a smartphone. It also allows field adjustment, commissioning, and troubleshooting even without power.

Belimo Helps Trane Technologies Streamline Sensor Installation and Commissioning

Built in 1999 and located in Madison, Alabama, Heritage Elementary School serves grades K-5 and enrolls more than 800 students. In 2021, Trane Technologies’ Huntsville, Alabama branch was contracted to overhaul the school’s existing building automation systems (BAS) as part of an overall HVAC system renovation and upgrade. The scope of work included replacing 73 water source heat pumps, adding an additional hot water boiler, hot water circulating pump, and upgrading the existing control system. As part of the project, Trane also needed to install 79 new temperature and humidity sensors – one for each heat pump and six additional sensors for make-up air units. Due to time constraints and the need to minimize potential rework caused by sensor failures, they turned to Belimo.

Belimo Energy Valve Enables Data-driven Optimization of University of Florida’s Shands Cardiovascular Hospital

University of Florida (UF) Health Shands Hospital is a top-tier academic medical center and prides itself on the energy efficiency of its facilities. Several Shands buildings have received ENERGY STAR® certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Energy Services group at the hospital is responsible for energy management initiatives, policies and procedures, and best practices for state-funded facilities on the main campus, including UF’s Health Science Center. The unit also provides technical guidance on new construction projects and implements energy conservation and optimization strategies in the hospital’s buildings. The team employs a highly digitalized approach to commissioning, operation, and maintenance of building and HVAC systems to fulfill its duties. For this, they rely heavily on the transparency provided by Belimo Energy Valves.

The institution combines rigorous college preparation with a long tradition of experiential learning and a commitment to educated graduates to leave the world better than they found it. As part of the mission, Ransom Everglades has made a concerted effort to promote environmental sustainability by continually seeking out opportunities for energy conservation measures across its facilities. Over the years, the school has worked closely with its controls contractor, Smart Building Solutions (SBS), to update aging systems and deploy cutting-edge solutions to improve energy efficiency. One technology that played a critical role in its most recent capital project was the Belimo Energy Valve.

The Passeio 42 building is 12 stories. Every floor is 12 thousand square feet, entirely serviced by a central Chilled Water Plant (CWP) with four air-condensed Chillers of 150 refrigeration tons supplying chilled water to fifty Air-Handling-Units (AHU) distributed through the floors. Every floor is individually controlled by a simple thermostat and pressure-dependent valve accompanied by a static balancing valve.

Modern workspaces with optimum room comfort.

Since 1987, Belimo's headquarters have been located in Hinwil in the canton of Zurich (Switzerland). The original building, which Belimo moved into twelve years after it was founded, has had extensions added to it over time as the company has grown, and was remodelled shortly after the turn of the millennium. It houses offices, workshops, storage rooms and laboratories as well as an Experience Center. On the top floor of the building - in the "Belimo Atrium" - the offices of the Finance and Business Services division are located across 1,000 m². The increasing number of employees required an increase in the number of workstations. At the same time, the general building technology was to be renewed. As a consequence, a comprehensive renovation project was launched. One of the aims of the total refurbishment of the floor was to provide employees with a state-of-the-art office that offers excellent room comfort at all times thanks to smart design and heating, ventilation and air conditioning as required. The building technology was planned by Jobst Willers AG, and the system integration was carried out by Demont Engineering GmbH.

545wyn is a first Class A office building in Wynwood. Gensler designed the building with three purposeful goals: 1) to elevate and cultivate Miami's standard office experience, 2) authentically reproduce Wynwood's vibrancy, and 3) to engage with the Wynwood neighborhood¹. Miami-based Smart Building Solutions (SBS) was tasked with designing the entire building's HVAC control and automation system. Aesthetics was another critical factor. In keeping with the owner and architect's vision, SBS wanted any control device visible to tenants to be low-profile and blend in seamlessly with the interior design.

Riding the Tide of Climate Change.

One of the biggest challenges facing the construction industry is to create climate- resistant solutions with maximum energy efficiency. An outstanding example is the Floating Office (FOR) in Rotterdam, designed and realised by the Powerhouse Company. The building was built on 15 concrete blocks that allow it to float on the Meuse River and uses the river's water for heating and cooling. The FOR aims to reflect the values of its primary tenant, the Global Center of Adaptation (GCA), an organisation that promotes environmentally friendly technologies and encourages a climate-centred approach to planning and investment phases. HVAC systems account for a large portion of the building's energy consumption, which is why Powerhouse chose to work with Belimo. Together with Powerhouse and the Roodenburg Groep, responsible for the installation, we managed to ensure optimum room comfort throughout the building at all times with the help of demand-controlled use of energy. In doing so, we helped make FOR the world's first carbon-neutral floating office.

In order to test new technologies, materials and systems in the areas of construction and architecture, without risk and under real-life conditions, the Swiss research institutes Empa and Eawag founded «NEST» (Next Evolution in Sustainable Building Technologies), the modular research and innovation building, in 2016. Over its nearly 50-year history, the 3,000+ seat arena has undergone several renovations to ensure its facilities are state-of-the-art. One of the more recent upgrade projects was aimed at improving the efficiency of the chiller system responsible for maintaining the temperature of the ice. The scope of work involved a complete overhaul of the chiller plant. Belimo played a critical role in the project – supplying ultrasonic flow meters and butterfly valves, which enabled enhanced visibility and accurate flow control.

Efficient zone control for optimum room comfort.

Ensuring an optimal indoor climate is essential for the concentration and performance of students and teachers at the FFHS. To achieve this, modern heating and cooling systems were installed in the new building and equipped with Belimo components. Additional Belimo products were used in the building’s fire protection system. The systems were planned by Jakob Forrer AG and installed by Hälg AG.

Save 1,080 metric tons of CO₂ in three months.

As part of a Belimo RetroFIT+ project, the plant of an international automotive manufacturer was retrofitted with Belimo Energy Valves to optimise interior comfort and to reduce the plant's CO₂ emissions. The first successes were achieved just three months after commissioning: Compared to the first three months of the previous year, 934,000 Sm³ of natural gas were saved, and 1,080 metric tons of CO₂ emissions were avoided.

Smoke control for escape and rescue routes in existing buildings.

The development in the Tscharnergut district of Bern was the largest housing project in Switzerland at the end of the 1950s. As part of a comprehensive refurbishment of the property, so-called pressure differential systems (PDS) have been installed in three of the four occupied twenty-storey buildings since the end of March 2021.

A PDS is a technical device that is permanently installed in buildings. In case of fire, it has the task of keeping escape and rescue routes – e.g. stairwells or fire brigade lift shafts – smoke-free by means of controlled overpressure.

The requirements of the client were optimally fulfilled through the use of Belimo products. The client was FAMBAU Genossenschaft Bern, the PDS consulting engineer was the Enfors AG company in Sempach. Hautle Anderegg und Partner AG was responsible for the execution planning and the implementation of the fire protection concept.

Interactive learning with state-of-the-art HVAC technology.

ROVC is the Dutch market leader for further education of technical experts from industry and the maritime sector. Over 15,000 professionals are trained annually in Rotterdam, Helmond and Ede. The training centre in Ede was built in 2021 and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology from the fields of energy, building management and air conditioning. It encompasses 7,100 m², of which 3,000 m² are used just for practical training. 18 classrooms, a canteen and several offices are also located in the new building. Unique educational opportunities are offered here, especially for training in the HVAC sector: For example, the building has seven different modern air conditioning systems, including a CHP (combined heat and power) system, an air-to-water heat pump and a VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) system. These give trainees the opportunity to see, feel and experience state-ofthe-art HVAC technology. As a partner of ROVC, Belimo provided a total of 679 field devices and supports the training centre in optimally preparing the specialists of tomorrow to plan and implement efficient HVAC solutions.

Emch+Berger ImmoConsult AG is a company of the Emch+Berger Group, which was founded in 1953. Its subsidiaries across Switzerland offer services for planning, consultation and management of real estate. In late 2020, the company acquired new office space on Seebahnstrasse in Zurich. Thanks to the complete, newly installed ventilation and cooling systems, employees can look forward to a comfortable room climate. Founded in 1962, Läderach (Schweiz) AG is a family-run chocolatier in its third generation. Its latest prestigious project is the «House of Läderach», built next to the company’s production facility in Bilten, which was constructed in 2012. The House of Läderach offers a world of experience consisting of a live production facility, a shop, a café, a three-meter-high chocolate fountain and interactive guided tours. The new building also houses several event rooms, individual offices as well as open-plan offices.

Ziegler Druck- und Verlags-AG was a Swiss media service provider and publishing house founded in 1836 and based in Winterthur. The publishing house included the newspapers "Der Landbote" and the "Winterthurer Stadtanzeiger". Following its takeover by the Zurich-based media group Tamedia, the Ziegler printing press ceased operations at the end of 2015.

Patient rooms with quickly adaptable room climate using Belimo products.

Serious illnesses and injuries place high demands not only on the personnel and infrastructure of a hospital. In particular, patients are faced with the major challenge of long stays and extensive treatments.
The University Hospital Zurich (USZ) has always been a leader in the treatment of burn injuries and was able to further strengthen its position by opening the new «SUED2» building. Among other things, it is equipped with a specialised clinic for the treatment of burn victims, which offers the highest degree of comfort for patients through the use of Belimo products and also makes longer stays in the clinic more pleasant. The building was planned and designed by the USZ Real Estate Directorate in collaboration with the Canton of Zurich Construction Directorate. In spring 2019, the Swiss sporting goods manufacturer Scott Sports moved into a new office building at its headquarters in Givisiez. The Eqho tower, located in the La Défense district of Paris, has undergone a major renovation over a number of years. Originally called “Descartes Tower”, it is a 130 m high office skyscraper (40 floors) opened in 1988. World's first: Building renovation to receive triple certification

The Challenger site in the Parisian suburb of Guyancourt is to date unique in the world with respect to sustainable building renovation. Belimo’s EF Spring Return Actuators Serve as Economical Alternative to MS41xx Series Actuators

During the replacement process, a number of different actuators were examined and after careful consideration the decision was made to replace the failing units with Belimo’s EFX120-S N4 spring return actuators. In addition to having a NEMA-4 rating, Belimo’s EF actuators offered higher torque (270 in-lbs) in a single direct-coupled unit, and because of this, only 150 actuators were required to do the work that the 250 MS41xx units originally did (one EF unit can effectively operate a 66 sq ft damper). Seamless energy monitoring in the "Flagship" of the Lenzerheide

The new Motta Hut is the hub for hungry and thirsty snow sports enthusiasts.

The slopes and ski lifts in the Arosa Lenzerheide ski resort had just barely shut down in 2017 before the bulldozers moved in to tear down the old Motta Hut. The new flagship project had to be ready by the start of the 2017/2018 ski season. The new Motta Hut has room inside for 120 people and outside for 240 more on its ample, multi-level sun terrace. The innovative timber-frame construction ensures a rustic, yet modern ambiance, both inside and out. This makes the new ski restaurant an international flagship and an experience for every snow sport enthusiast. To ensure that the restaurant operators would be able to take care of their guests, a HVAC system with the maximum amount of automation was once again selected for the Motta Hut. As with other projects, the plant was also equipped with Belimo products. The new sensor product range attracted just as much attention as the Belimo Energy Valve™ with Cloud connection.

New materials and production technologies for sustainable mobility.

The LeichtbauCampus Open Hybrid LabFactory (OHLF) in Wolfsburg, Germany enables the research and development of new and innovative lightweight construction concepts for the coming vehicle generations in a novel cooperation model. The technological activities of the research campus focus on the simultaneous development of materials and production technology in multi-material systems for hybrid lightweight construction. The OHLF is a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the "Research Campus - Public-Private Partnership for Innovation" funding initiative. The 10,000 m ² large floor area is divided into office, laboratory and technical centre areas as well as the complex technical building equipment. In the middle of the building is the 2,100 m ² technical centre, the heart of OHLF. The hall, which is more than three storeys high, houses production facilities and facilities for design and simulation.

Thanks to the unbeatable visibility, visitors have a terrific view over the Lenzerheide holiday region and more than 1001 mountain peaks. The restaurant spoils its guests with regional and homemade cuisine. Following the successful cooperation in the construction project of the Scharmoin Mountain Restaurant, various zone valves were installed in the panorama restaurant on the summit of the Rothorn. These, in turn, were integrated into the management system of the Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG. This allows control of the individual zones via the building management system via remote maintenance. As with most mountain restaurants, the majority of the HVAC system in Lenzerheide is fully automated. The division of the restaurant into different zones not only provides highest comfort for visitors, leaseholders and employees, but also great flexibility in room utilisation, as well as transparency with regard to energy requirements. Furthermore, shutting off unused zones makes greater energy savings possible.

Roger Bennett was looking for an opportunity to showcase pressure independent control valve technology to his clients. The DonauSplash indoor swimming pool in Tulln, which was originally constructed in 1974, was reopened after almost a year and a half of general renovation in October 2014. The entire building technology was updated as part of the general renovation and a conversion from natural gas to biomass district heating was implemented. Efficient utilisation of energy was the motto of the building technology consulting engineers – after all, the heating output is about 500 kW. About 30 m³ of water is moved every hour in order to control the temperature of the individual bathing zones. The electronically controlled Electronic Pressure-Independent Valve (EPIV) from Belimo provides a tight seal in order to prevent energy losses in the water circuits, and increases efficiency during planning, implementation and operation.

University of Oregon’s Football Complex Runs at Maximum Efficiency

Built in 2013, the University of Oregon’s (U of O) Hatfield-Dowlin Complex in Eugene is one of the most advanced sports facilities in the world. The six-story, $63 million building, donated by Nike founder (and Oregon alumnus) Phil Knight and his wife penny, features 142,000 square feet of meeting space, locker rooms, offices, lounges, and auditoriums, along with a cafeteria and state-of-the-art football fitness center. Since the complex was commissioned, facilities personnel at U of O have been focused on continuously enhancing efficiency and improving occupant comfort by leveraging the latest and greatest building technologies. Pressure Independent Valves Make Cost Effective Alternative to Reverse Return System for US Census Bureau

It was right there in black and white. Paraphrased, the guideline stated that pump and piping systems shall be arranged in a reverse return configuration. The standard is part of the GSA’s (US General Service Administration) design guide, known as the PBS-P100, and serves as the guideline for all US governmental buildings. However to all rules, there are at least one or two exceptions. Such was the case with the new US Census Bureau headquarters located in Suitland, Maryland. The 8-story, 1.5 million sq. ft. facility, scheduled to be completed in October 2006, simply was not a good candidate for the use of reverse return for all systems.

Founded in 1878, Western University in London, Ontario, is widely regarded as one of Canada’s premier collegiate institutions with an on-campus population to approximately 40,000 students, faculty, and staff. With overall utility costs that average over CAD 20 million, Western’s facilities team devotes considerable time and resources to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.By replacing their network of air
handling unit (AHU) control valves with 223 Belimo Energy Valves, Western was able to optimize Delta T, advance overall system performance, and increase occupant comfort. Overall, the project lowered chilled water consumption by 32% year over year while significantly reducing utility peak demand charges by CAD 2.1 million in the first year, CAD 2 million in the second year, and CAD 2.5 million in the third year.

The above-average high growth in the MedTech sector necessitated the construction of an extension annex for clean rooms, assembly, logistics and storage capacity. The new three-storey building was put into operation in Autumn 2019 following a two-year construction period. Clean-room capacity was tripled in the ground floor to a total of 1800 square meters. The basem*nt floor is being used for new storage areas and the second floor for production and assembly. An in-house staff restaurant designed to serve around 200 employees was then opened on the top floor in 2020.
