My Hero Academia is a shōnen manga written and drawn by Kōhei Horikoshi. It has been published since July 2014 in Shūeisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, and has thirty-five volumes as of July 2022. An anime adaptation produced by studio Bones aired between April and June 2016 on MBS in Japan. A second season aired between April and September 2017, followed by a third season airing between April and September 2018, a fourth season between October 2019 and April 2020, and a fifth season between March and September 2021. A sixth season began airing in October 2022. Three anime films were released in August 2018, December 2019, and August 2021, respectively. In this article, we are going to tell you whether the My Hero Academia series is actually finished or ending soon.
My Hero Academia is a franchise that currently consists of two major works, a manga series that has been ongoing since July 7, 2014, and its anime adaptation, which has been airing since April 3, 2016. Kōhei Horikoshi has stated that the manga had a year to go in 2022, but has since corrected himself, stating that the series would continue even after 2023. As for the anime, it is still ongoing as there is a lot of material to adapt.
The rest of this article is going to focus on the publication of the My Hero Academia series and all its aspects. We’re going to go over the whole publication history and ultimately tell you whether the My Hero Academia series is over or still ongoing so that you know how much material from this great series you can expect.
Is the My Hero Academia manga over?
The series has been published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 7, 2014 (Issue 32/2014). The chapters have also been published in 36 volumes so far. The tenth volume sold over 450,000 copies in Japan in the first four weeks after publication. A spin-off series called Boku no Academia Smash!! by Hirofumi Neda and Kohei Horikoshi between November 2015 and November 2017 on the Shōnen Jump+ digital platform. In August 2016, another spin-off titled My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, by Hiyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court, started publication in Shōnen Jump Giga and, since December 2016, on Shōnen Jump+. The manga ended in 2022. A third spin-off, My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions, began publication in 2019 and is still ongoing. The overall structure of the series is as follows:

As of the time of writing this article, the My Hero Academia manga series is quite alive and well. There are absolutely no signs of immediate cancelation, and while the story certainly is slowly approaching the end of its epic final arc, there is no news about any cancelation or the series reaching its end as of this moment, which means that there is still a lot more of the manga to enjoy. In the two upcoming sections, we are going to tell you about the fate of the My Hero Academia anime series, as well as what we know about the end of My Hero Academia, both in terms of the plot, and its publication schedule.
Is the My Hero Academia anime over?
Revealed on the manga’s official Twitter account and then officially announced in the 49th issue of Shūeisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, an anime adaptation, produced by Bones and directed by Kenji Nagasaki, aired from April 3 to June 26, 2016. The episodes were simulcast in North America, the UK, and Ireland, as the rights were acquired by Funimation. A second season of the anime announced at the end of the first was broadcast between March 25 and September 30, 2017, in 26 episodes. Two OVA episodes were released as an attachment to the limited edition of the thirteenth and fourteenth volumes of the manga on April 4 and June 2, 2017, respectively.
A third season, announced after the second, aired on April 7, 2018, with twenty-five episodes. In the 44th issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump of 2018, a fourth season of the anime was announced that aired from October 2019 to April 2020. At the end of the last episode of the fourth season, the fifth season was officially announced with a teaser trailer aired. The simulcast of the fourth season was broadcast by Crunchyroll. The fifth season aired in 2021 also on YTV and NTV. The rights to simulcast were once again purchased exclusively by Crunchyroll. The simulcast of the sixth season began on October 1, 2022, and again the distribution rights were acquired exclusively by Crunchyroll. Everything we’ve said about the manga above can be applied to the anime series as well. Although we haven’t received official confirmation of a seventh season of My Hero Academia (the sixth is still airing, though), the popularity of the manga and the initial anime adaptations make it almost a certain thing, so we can confirm that the anime is not over either and that we are going to see more of the anime in the future. We just don’t know when.
What do we know about the ending of My Hero Academia?
Horikoshi originally stated that the manga will not last as long as One Piece because he doesn’t have it in him to write that much, but would instead like to make it significantly shorter when compared to the other shōnen manga series. In April 2021, Horikoshi confirmed that he the manga had already surpassed his expectations in terms of length, but that it was still heading towards the ending that he had “decided on” before the series even began. In December 2021, Horikoshi stated during an interview at the Jump Festa ’22 event that “if things go smoothly, the manga will meet its goal in one year. If it doesn’t go smoothly, I think [Izuku’s voice actor] Yamash*ta will be reading out the exact same letter from me at next year’s Jump Festa.”
In May 2022, the author of the manga announced a very bittersweet message from the manga’s volume 34. He said, “I feel like I can finally see the goal in sight. It’s a rather strange feeling getting to this point. In the past, I would just be drawing without a single care [for the future], but now I wonder just how many more times can I draw these characters. Change is scary as you grow older. Well, I really shouldn’t dwell on that! Until next volume then!” In October 2022, however, Horikoshi decided to reconsider the statement he made during the Jump Festa ’22 event, confirming that it would take him longer to conclude the manga’s epic final arc.
And this is basically all we know about the ending, including how it ends. Plotwise, we know that Katsuki Bakugo is going to have a “big scene” before the end, but that is all we know at the moment. We don’t know how Horikishi plans to end his manga and it seems that – and that is definitely good news – it is going to take him a while to do it, which means that the manga won’t be ending before 2024, perhaps even 2025. Mangaka is famous for giving horrible predictions about their works ending, which is why we still have a lot to look forward to.
