Understanding the standard crafting system in Project Zomboid can take hours of gameplay, thanks to its intricate requirements and level of detail. While the base game is fantastic, there are some community-made mods out there that help to take Project Zomboid to new heights and save you some time.

Here, we've picked out the best mods for Project Zomboid, looking specifically at Steam Workshop mods that help elevate the standard playthrough experience. Some of these are gameplay-oriented and others focus on improving the interface, and you can use the links below to hop to a specific mod if you need.

  • Bigger Character Avatar
  • Better Sorting
  • Pineville
  • GooseZed
  • Rain Wash

This is by no means an exhaustive list – if you're looking for more mods, check out the Project Zomboid page on Steam Workshop.

Bigger Character Avatar

Created by a user named congbinh, this mod is simple but effective. As the name of the mod suggests, it simply increases the size of your character avatar when playing Project Zomboid.

While this may sound like an odd requirement if you've not played the game much, it can make all the difference when attempting to get through a horde of zombies or navigate through a dark and tricky zone. It's a small quality-of-life improvement that's worth picking up.

It's important to note that some folk have reported compatibility issues with other aesthetic mods, mainly those that affect outfits, so be mindful of this if you choose to download it.

You can check out the Bigger Character Avatar mod on Steam Workshop here.

Better Sorting

The best mods for Project Zomboid are arguably the ones that add to your overall gameplay experience without distracting from the base game and story. This Better Sorting mod by ChobitsCrazy is an exceptional utility mod that makes inventory management a lot easier to deal with.

Much like the previous inventory, this mod is simple but effective. It adds a plethora of new item categories into the game, making them visible from the standard inventory screen.

Interestingly, this mod includes categories for most modded items, too. It works well alongside other popular Project Zomboid mods and can help make crafting and finding specific items during your playthrough a whole lot easier.

You can check out the Better Sorting mod here on Steam Workshop.

Pineville

Several Project Zomboid maps can be modded into the game and Pineville stands out as one of the best. Coming from creator Konstantin_Ananas on Steam, this modded map is perfect for Project Zomboid fans who want something new that still feels authentic to the game.

The Steam Workshop description for this mod notes that it tries to "not stray from the style of vanilla cities" and that, while each building was handcrafted, they were made with the original models of Project Zomboid in mind for a cohesive feel.

Map mods add new locations to the map which can be a great way to spice up your next playthrough. This particular map includes:

  • Downtown with apartments, commercial buildings, and a hospital
  • Suburbs
  • A trailer park with a scrap yard
  • Farms

Pineville is close to Rosewood on the standard Project Zomboid map. You can check out the Pineville map mod here on Steam Workshop.

GooseZed

Moving the typically somber tone of the game aside, the GooseZed mod is the brainchild of creator Glytch3r and it adds a new type of zombie – very evil geese, sometimes wielding knives.

Paying homage to Untitled Goose Game, this ridiculous mod is unmissable if you're looking for a lighter Project Zomboid experience. The evil geese are suitably silly but can still portray a very real threat, especially if you're playing a custom run with trickier settings.

The geese are customizable, too, which means you can affect elements like their run speed and interactions when setting up DIY runs.

Rain Wash

This NoctisFalco mod improves the functionality of rain in the standard Project Zomboid game.

More specifically, this mod allows rain to slowly wash away blood and dirt on the following elements:

  • Your character's body
  • Clothes
  • Equipped bags
  • Equipped weapons
  • Attached weapons
  • Your character's vehicle

Additionally, this mod gives you the ability to perform the action of washing in the rain as an alternative to using a bath or a shower.

This is a very logical mod. Outer layers of clothes will get wetter quicker than inner layers of clothes, for example, and dirt on clothes can never be fully removed by the rain alone.

You can check out the Rain Wash mod here on Steam Workshop.
